Description
Betel nut is the fruit of the areca palm (Areca catechu). The palm is originally native to the Philippines, but was carried widely through the tropics by the Austronesian migrations and trade since at least 1500 BCE due to its use in betel nut chewing. It is widespread in cultivation and is considered naturalized in much of the tropical Pacific (Melanesia and Micronesia), South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of east Africa. It is not to be confused with betel (Piper betle) leaves that are often used to wrap it.
Here are some key points:
-
🌴 What it is: The areca nut is often wrapped in a betel leaf (from the betel vine, Piper betle) together with slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and sometimes spices, tobacco, or sweeteners. This preparation is commonly called paan in South Asia.
-
⚡ Effects: Chewing betel nut acts as a stimulant. It can cause mild euphoria, alertness, and a warming sensation. It also stains saliva and teeth red.
-
🩺 Health risks: Long-term use is associated with:
-
Oral cancer (especially oral squamous cell carcinoma)
-
Gum disease and tooth damage
-
Oral submucous fibrosis (a condition that makes it hard to open the mouth)
-
Increased risk of metabolic disorders like diabetes and cardiovascular disease
-
-
🌏 Cultural role: Betel nut chewing is a traditional and social practice in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, Micronesia, and many Pacific islands. In some places, it’s offered to guests as a sign of hospitality
