Description
Sunflower oil
Sunflower oil is extracted from the seeds of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus). sunflower oil goes through processing (neutralization, bleaching, deodorization) to remove impurities, color, odor, and free fatty acids. This makes it more stable, with a high smoke point (~232°C / 450°F), making it ideal for frying and deep-frying.
Culinary Uses
- Cooking & frying (chips, snacks, fast food).
- Baking and confectionery.
- Salad dressings and mayonnaise (if lightly refined).
Nutrition & Health
- High in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), mainly linoleic acid (omega-6).
- Some varieties are bred to be high oleic (monounsaturated fat, more stable & heart-healthy).
- Contains Vitamin E, a strong antioxidant.
💡 Health Points:
- Supports heart health if used in moderation (especially high-oleic type).
- Neutral taste and light texture → suitable for diverse diets.
- Must be balanced with omega-3 intake (too much omega-6 vs omega-3 can promote inflammation).
Industrial & Non-Food Uses
- Cosmetics & skincare: lotions, creams, hair products (light and non-greasy).
- Pharmaceuticals: carrier oil in medicines and vitamin supplements.
- Biofuel production.
Fun Facts
- Ukraine and Russia are the largest producers of sunflower oil.
- Sunflower oil is one of the top three vegetable oils consumed globally (with palm and soybean oil).
- High-oleic sunflower oil can stay stable at room temperature for long storage periods, making it valuable for the food industry.
